This quote means that in order to live a happy and good life you have to do good. Being good means choosing the right and having great character. The point of living is to be a good person. If you're old and look back on your life, you'd be much happier knowing you we're a good person and lived life the best way possible. Being good doesn't only benefit you, but the people around you as well. Nobody wants to live a horrible life. The way to prevent that is to do good.
