Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated by many countries. All
the countries have different origins stories. For example, the history of
Thanksgiving Day in the united states started with a ship filled with a hundred
white people coming from England, named Mayflower. The pilgrims dropped an
anchor far north of their destination at the Hudson River and a month later
made it to Massachusetts Bay. Half of the passengers on Mayflower died for
exposure of disease and the cold of Winter, only half of them lived to see the
first day of Spring. The pilgrims didn't know how to farm in the new land, so a
native american, Squanto, taught the pilgrims how to cultivate corn, extract
sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants. In November of 1621, after the corn harvest was successful, the governor of their town, Plymouth, organized a celebratory feast known as the "First Thanksgiving" that lasted 3 days. Thanksgiving didn't become an official holiday till 1817 when New York was the first state to adopt an annual Thanksgiving Day. Finally, in 1863, Abraham Lincoln made it a national holiday, scheduled for the 4th Thursday of November every year.
