this statement means that you should do better than what anybody expects of you. If someone asks you to so something, go the extra mile and do more than what they asked you. For example, if your parents ask you to do a chore such as cleaning your room, go the extra mile and clean something else such as the dishes or the living room or something else to show them you are more than what they expect you to be. Another example is if a doctor at a hospital is asked to treat a patient and that's all they do, its better to do more and get to know the patient and talk to them instead of treating them like just another nobody that's sick. It's good to show someone that you're better than who they think you are and to show them that you're diligent in your work.
