What this quote means is that Dean wasnt doing the right thing so people would remember him. He was doing it because it was the right thing to do. If you always do the right thing people will remember you whether you made a big impact or not. For example, if you want to leave a legacy, all you have to do is whats right. People won't remember you if you were a bad person. Dean Smith was a great coach because he had good character. He could coach his players to do good but he also taught good character by doing what was right all the time and that's why he's legendary. You can be a good coach that teaches a good basketball teach but you'll be a great coach if you teach good character as well. Having good character always comes first when choosing the right.
